3 Things I Wish I Knew About Lifting Before I Started

By Elizaveta Fehr

We all need to start somewhere with our fitness journey, and sometimes starting can be the hardest part. Here are some tips I wish I knew before I started lifting in the gym.

#1 Don’t worry about people judging you. At the gym, everyone is going there to workout to work on themselves. Most of the time, everyone else is worried about how they look more than they are paying attention to you. Even if you feel like all eyes are on you, you can combat these uncomfortable feelings by wearing something you feel confident in, going to the gym with a plan, and playing music that makes you excited.

#2 You can’t outwork a bad diet. Many people think that if they just go to the gym, they can eat anything they want. For some people that have high metabolisms, they won’t notice too much of a difference that a bad diet can make, but that still doesn’t mean they are nourishing their bodies in the right way. You have to prioritize a healthy diet and a consistent gym routine in order to see results.

#3 Results take time. Everyone’s bodies are different, and someone else’s quick progress doesn’t take away from your long term improvements. Try to measure your success with building strength. If you can leg press more weight one week, then you are improving. Congratulate yourself!
