Healthy Holiday Habits

By: Meron Teffera

In comes the season of attending potlucks, parties, and holiday dinners. With the holidays slowly approaching, it's hard to stay away from indulging in all the holiday delights. As the warm apple pie and baked mac and cheese stare at you from across the table, sticking to your healthy regimen may feel almost impossible. I’m here to tell you it is, in fact possible. By remembering these tips, you can escape the obstacle holidays pose on your healthy diet/ routine;

  1. Eat, but eat moderately; Everyone deserves a day to eat and celebrate with their friends and family. Creating a healthy holiday diet may become stressful at potlucks and dinners where you have no control over the menu. It’s okay to indulge in some cookies and wine, but do so moderately. Enjoy yourself but don’t go over the top!

  2. Exercise when you have time; This time of the year is extremely busy for some. Between working and shopping and taking care of other holiday obligations, you may feel like you don’t have time to workout. Squeezing in a 15 minute workout is better than skipping an entire day. If you can’t stick to your normal workout schedule, exercise whenever you have time.

  3. Use the 80/20 rule; While everyone else around you is eating cake, candies and etc, why should you have to restrain yourself? Start by filling up 80% of your plate with healthy choices (protein, vegetables, grains) and leave the 20% for whatever you want. This allows you to feel fulfilled and not guilty about ruining your diet.

  4. Use smaller plates; If you really feel like there’s no way you can restrain yourself from indulging in all the holiday eats, use a smaller plate. Big dinner plates give you room to eat more than you should. By using smaller plates, you’ll easily be able to tell when you’re full and not overdoing it.

Eating healthy and obtaining a normal exercise routine is hard anytime of the year, but is especially challenging during the holiday season. Here at JPFIT4LIFE, we can make sure you’re continuing to eat healthy and exercise on a weekly basis.
