What to Eat Before, During, and After a Workout

A key component of achieving your fitness goals is maintaining

a healthy diet. However, many people don’t know which nutrients they need to sustain themselves and build muscle. It is important to understand which foods are best to eat before, during, and after your workout.

Pre-Workout

Carbs are a major source of energy, and will fuel your body for any workout, for instance, bananas are a great option. Whole grain breads, oats, and cereals are also excellent sources of carbohydrates. Protein is essential for muscle growth. Therefore, try incorporating low-fat greek yogurt or lean proteins into your pre-workout meals. The timing of this meal is very important. For bigger meals, try to eat 2-3 hours before exercising. For smaller meals, try to eat 45-60 minutes before your workout. Following this rule will help prevent bloating and stomach discomfort during your workout.

During Your Workout

Drinking water while you work out is crucial. As you sweat it is important to rehydrate. According to the American Council on Exercise, 7 to 10 ounces of fluid every 10 to 20 minutes is recommended. If you are engaging in a more intensive workout, it could be beneficial to incorporate snacks throughout. Energy and protein bars help maintain your energy levels, as well as providing sufficient protein for muscle building.

Post-Workout

Working out burns a lot of calories and puts strain on your muscles. The post-workout meal is essential for recovery. It is important to rehydrate after any workout. Good post-workout food options include: lean proteins, whole grains, fruit, greens, yogurt, etc. If you are unsure how to incorporate these foods into your diet, consider the following recipes.

  • Brown rice, grilled chicken, and sweet potato

  • Avocado with eggs on whole wheat toast

  • Fruit smoothie

  • Protein smoothie

  • Quinoa, salmon, and broccoli

Next time you visit your local grocery store, try to look for some of these foods to include in your meals.
